What are Underfloor Heating Systems?

Underfloor heating systems are heating systems integrated into the floor of buildings and are used to directly transfer heat from the floor to the environment. These systems are also known as underfloor heating or radiant floor heating.

Underfloor heating systems generally have two main types: hot water-based or electric resistance-based.

Hot Water-Based Underfloor Heating: In this system, hot water is generated by a boiler or heater, and this hot water passes through pipes laid under the floor or on a concrete screed at floor level. As the hot water passes through the pipes in the floor, it heats the floor and consequently the air in the room. This provides a homogeneous heat distribution on the floor, resulting in more evenly heated rooms.

Electric Resistance-Based Underfloor Heating: In this system, an electric resistance heating element such as an underfloor heating cable or heating mat is used. When an electric current passes through the underfloor heating cable, it generates heat that is then spread from the floor to the environment. Electric resistance-based underfloor heating systems are generally preferred for smaller areas or individual rooms.

What are the Advantages of Underfloor Heating Systems?

Comfortable Heating: Underfloor heating systems heat the room in a homogeneous manner, starting from the bottom of the room through the radiant heat emitted from the floor. This provides a more comfortable heating experience and reduces the risk of cold spots or air drafts.

Energy Efficiency: Underfloor heating operates at lower temperatures and can retain heat for longer durations. This leads to energy savings and more efficient heating.

Visual Aesthetics: Underfloor heating systems eliminate visually disruptive elements such as radiators or heating units in rooms. The pipes or heating elements laid beneath or on the floor are not visible.

Improved Air Quality: Underfloor heating systems reduce air circulation and minimize the circulation of dust, pollen, or allergens. As a result, they provide cleaner indoor air quality.

Underfloor heating systems are typically preferred in newly constructed buildings or during significant renovations. The installation and design of the system should be carried out by a specialized plumber or heating system company. Additionally, regular maintenance and inspections of underfloor heating systems are important.
